THE SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA CATHEDRAL PROGRAMME
The Santiago de Compostela Cathedral Programme is the most significant project affecting the cathedral to date, including as it does the preventive conservation and restoration of the Portico of Glory and its surrounding area and of the murals in the Capilla Mayor, as well as the reorganisation of the Cathedral Museums. This multi-annual programme, which is international in its scope, has been designed and undertaken by the Archdiocese of Santiago de Compostela and the Cathedral Chapter with the exclusive support of the Fundación Pedro Barrié de la Maza, which is promoting the Programme and providing 3,000,000 euros in funding within the framework of its long-standing commitment to restoring the cultural and historical heritage of Galicia.
Renowned specialists from all over Europe were invited to submit their tenders for carrying out the work, which has been awarded to a multi-disciplinary team of specialised professionals who will work together under a single technical management team.
The preventive conservation and restoration of the Portico of Glory and its surrounding area is based on a holistic approach that takes as its maxim the principle of the greatest respect for the epitome of the European Romanesque style. In order to enable this work to take place, scaffolding has been put up round the Portico that faithfully follows its structure and contours and meets the delicate requirements for its conservation. This structure also permits a necessary round-the-clock monitoring of the site whilst work is being carried out during the various stages of the project, which consist of the initial study, the drafting and carrying out of a preventive conservation plan, the drafting of a plan of restoration work and finally the restoration of the polychrome stone sculpture work itself.
